things not seeming real

I get pocket aces up against pocket tens I flop top set and turn river ten ten for quads is this a joke or is that actually possible

Any two cards are possible and as humans we tend to only remember when it happens against us.
Just assuming an all-in situation, heading into the turn 7 cards are face up, so 45 remain in the deck, two of which are the remaining TT. The odds of turn and river being those tens are 2/45 x 1/44, or basically about 1/1000. So runner runner doesn't happen much, but it does happen. I've seen it on TV and youtube in huge hands in big tournaments, and in the over 150,000,000 hands that have been played on APT an overset losing to a runner runner has happened numerous times here also.
From a serious perspective here, one of the keys of being a great poker player is being able to ignore bad luck and just keep on playing. Most people tend to get very upset and go on tilt when bad low probability events happen. Even great players like Hellmuth get visibly upset by bad luck. Then there are some real great ones who don't seem to blink and just congratulate the opponent and continue playing (Negreanu comes to mind) because they know that in the long run, the opponent made a mistake and frequent mistakes means more money in their pocket even if they happened to have a very bad beat.
In your hand you mention, you should be happy that you got your opponent to continue with TT on the flop vs. your set of Aces. And if you got all your money in on the turn, in expectations that was great. Yeah, he got lucky this time, but in the long run, you would win in those situations.
Hi Pault,
I can personally let you know, it's very real. In a live tourney, I had pocket 7s once and the board was 6 4 2. The turn was a 7, so I thought I was golden, we got in in on the turn. He has 85d. The river was the case 7. He got lucky, then I got even luckier.
Just in the past few days I've had 2 improbable beats while playing 6-max cash online
1) I hold Q10o in BB and flop is AKJ rainbow so I flop the straight. I check and IR bets. I flat call. Turn is a 2, bringing only a diamond draw so I check again. IR bets and this time I raise. He shoves on me and I call. He had pocket 2's so he turned a set. River pairs the J and he takes the pot with a FH.
2) I hold Jd10d in the BB. UTG raises, BTN calls and I complete. Flop Jc10cJs so I flop top FH. I check, IR bets, BTN flats and so do I. Turn is an irrelevant 3 and the same thing happens. River is 9c. I check, IR bets and BTN shoves. I'm dreading what could be coming but I know I have to call with top FH so I do. Sure enough, he turns over KcQc for the straight flush to stack me. 10/20 game so kind of painful.
Bad beats happen all the time. My one and only Royal Flush came in a big cash game where I stacked someone with QQQAA. Play this game long enough and you will see pretty much everything. We think we see more bad beats because of something called observation bias. We are more prone to take note of the times we get drawn out on than the times we do the same to our opponents.
