New Poker Rules for the 2025 WSOP

Spread the word and share this article

We are now less than three weeks from the start of the 2025 WSOP in Las Vegas, Nevada. The WSOP kicks off with the No Limit Hold ‘Em Mystery Millions on May 27th. This week, the WSOP released the new poker rules for this summer’s tournament, and a number if big changes can be found within. If you are heading out to the WSOP this summer, or even if you just plan to watch the action on TV, you should know what changes have been made and how they might affect tournament play.

Consulting with Coaches

This year, players are not able to duck over to the rail and talk about their strategy during tournament play. They are allowed to talk strategy during breaks, but not when cards are in the air. Specifically, participants are not allowed to “Discuss strategy with an outside source at any time while the tournament clock is running, and participants are not on break.” So players will no longer be wandering over to the rail mid-play to check in.

No Electronic Devices at the End of Tournaments

Last year brought controversy around what information players are receiving via their tech and their rails. So, one of the new poker rules in 2025 states that “Once Participants have reached the final three tables in any Tournament, all approved electronic devices must be removed.” Those who are caught with such devices can be disqualified. Additionally, this rule applies whenever players are on a feature table.

The feature table addendum is interesting. It implies that the WSOP is less concerned with actual impropriety than the appearance of impropriety on its live broadcast.

Show Up on Time

This new poker rule might as well be called the Hellmuth Rule. It states that “Any Participant who has not taken a hand by the start of the level after the first official break will be considered a ‘no show.’ These Participants will have their chips removed from play and will not be eligible to participate in that Event.” The good news is that the participant can get a refund if they are a “no show.” If you plan to play, plan to show up (at least relatively) on time.

New Way to Buy In

Okay, it’s not one of the new poker rules, but the WSOP has also released a new WSOP+ poker app. The new app will allow players to register directly for tournaments without having to stand in line at the cage. Players do need to show up for a one time ID verification before using the app. But once they are verified, they are free to purchase. There appear not to be surcharges for ACH, PayPal, or Paris Tournament accounts. A 3% credit card surcharge does apply.

Anyone who has been to the WSOP knows that the cage can be a nightmare before a big tournament. Heck, it can be a nightmare at any time. Hopefully, this new app will help to shorten the lines and offer players a more seamless buy in experience.

There are a number of other changes to the 2025 WSOP rules, but the those above are the most notable. If you are heading to Vegas this summer, be sure to check out our article Time to Prepare for the 2025 WSOP. And be sure to practice for the events you want to play on Advanced Poker Training.
